In the case of semi permanent or permanent hair dyes, hydrogen peroxide is often included to bleach the natural color out of the hair before the pigment is added. Ammonia is used to activate the color and to develop the final shade. These two chemicals have the potential to cause damage to the hair if not used properly.

The most common way that hair dye can damage hair is by drying out the hair shafts, leaving them brittle and prone to breakage. When this happens, extra care must be taken to avoid breaking the hair strands. It is possible to be left with practically no hair or to have patchy hair left behind when the shafts break off.

One thing that can increase this risk is failure to follow the directions on the box that the hair dye came in to the letter. The times listed for leaving the dye on the hair should be followed exactly. Overexposure to the chemicals can result in the hair being dried and damaged.

Mixing hair dye with other chemicals, such as permanents or hair relaxers can also result in chemical damage to the hair.

The next form of damage that can occur is that the hair is left an unnatural shade that is not the desired result. Different chemicals present in tap water and certain compounds found in the hair dye can react in unexpected ways to produce green, orange, or some other color that is not anticipated or desired.

While the cornstarch is much less expensive than the actual dry shampoo, most of the product formulas created today include nutrients and other ingredients that are designed to promote healthy hair and to allow one to style the hair in the manner he desires once the powder is removed. Of course it must be understood that this is simply a method of cleaning the hair and refreshing the appearance in between regular shampooings and does not take the place of regular shampooing.

Most people do not realize how difficult this can be, especially for a man who has less experience dealing with long hair. This article will attempt to explain how to grow long hair.

No matter how long one wishes to wear his hair, he must first start out with hair that is not damaged in any way. The only true way to accomplish this is to cut the hair. How short the hair must be cut to remove any damage is purely a function of how well the hair is taken care of under normal circumstances. If a large number of chemicals, especially colors or permanents, have been applied to the hair, it may be necessary to cut it extremely short before beginning to let it grow longer.

On average, hair grows at the rate of about half an inch per month. As long as the hair is properly cared for, this means that a person should see growth of about 5 inches a year. The reason we say 5 inches per year instead of six is because it will be necessary at least once or twice each year to trim the ends off the hair that have become damaged. Most stylists recommend trimming the hair a half-inch every 3 to 4 months while allowing it to grow, then to maintain the length once the hair becomes as long as is desired.

It is also important to limit the number of chemicals to which the hair is exposed when one is trying to increase the length. This is because excessive application of hair colors or perms can damage the hair so severely that it has to be cut off and the process begun again.

Avoiding tangles while trying to grow long hair is also important. One of the most common mistakes that people make is pulling their hair into a pile on top of their head while shampooing. In order to avoid knots and tangles, it is best to apply the shampoo to the scalp then work down the length of the hair to get a clean. Application of a good conditioner can also help in this area.

Contrary to popular belief, excessive brushing does more damage to the hair than beautifying. One should never use a brush on wet hair. And truthfully, it is better to use a wide toothed comb than a brush even on dry hair.

Following these steps will not guarantee that a person will be able to grow long hair. However, they will certainly increase the chances.

Androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, affects both men and women around the world. This is actually the single most common cause of permanent hair loss. Despite the fact there have been many myths propagated about the reasons for male pattern baldness, the simple truth is many people have a genetic predisposition for losing their hair.

Scientists have found multiple genes associated with hair loss. Most, though not all, are located on the sex linked chromosome identified as the X-chromosome. This means the genetic disposition for male pattern baldness is actually inherited from the female side of your family. In order for a woman to suffer hair loss in the typical male pattern, she would have to inherit multiple recessive genes that were reinforced by being present on both X-chromosomes.

The more direct cause of hair loss is a buildup of a hormone identified as dihydrotestosterone(DHT). This is considered to be a male hormone because it is a form of testosterone, but it is also produced in female bodies. Hence, the reason male pattern baldness can affect both sexes.

Scientists believe that androgenic alopecia evolved as a means of identifying more mature, socially settled males. Part of the reason for this belief stems from the fact that it affects not only human males, but also gorillas and orangutans.

The FDA has approved certain drugs as treatments for hair loss. The most commonly recognized of these is minoxydyl, normally sold under the trade name, Rogaine. Additional treatments include the application of topical caffeine and certain types of aloe vera based gels. Doctors can also prescribe a tablet taken orally containing the drug finasteride.

Both the drugs minoxydyl and finasteride work by reducing the amount of DHT present in the hair follicles. Other treatments work in different ways. In general, the best that can be hoped for is a cessation of additional hair loss. Only in extremely rare cases is the condition reversible.

In addition to the above listed treatments, several surgical procedures that involve transplanting hair, usually from the back of the head, into areas where hair is thinning have been created. Advances continue to be made in the process of surgically replacing lost hair. Unfortunately, the price continues to be more than the average male can afford.

Male pattern baldness affects a large percentage of people. Many have decided to simply live with the effects and let their hair go naturally. Others seek treatments designed to reduce or stop hair loss. When possible, they prefer treatments to cause new growth to replace lost hair.

If the color choice is not one they desire, it can be easily washed out and another color applied.
